Is the 400 or 500 scrambler better. Im going to buy one and i dont know if i want the two stroke or 4 and whats the differences. I do mostly trail riding so i dont know which one is better.

 

The 400 is most likely a bit faster, but I would take the 500 over the 400 any day. Mainly for reliability and the torque of a four stroke.

 

thanks i like 4 stroke reliability to, but then again ive never had a 2 stroke. Anybody else care to comment

Granted stock, the 400 is only a hair faster than the 500. Add a couple hundred bucks for a RCR or HPD kit, and the 400 will be MUCH faster.

Stock, I think the 400 has 35 HP, the 500 36. Some of the 'power up' kits I see advertise 50+ HP out of the 400.

It is MUCH easier to power up a 2 stroke, plus it is cheaper and easier to rebuild. However, you will have to do it more often.

2-strokes kick ***. If you use a good synthetic oil you should get years and years without needing a rebuild. I'm on my third Polaris 2-stroke and never had a problem with any of them. Unless you put a TON of miles on it, it will last longer than when you're ready for something different. No oil and filter changes, no valve adjustments just lots of FUN! Get a 2-stroke while you can, in a few years they may be damn hard to find.

 

They don't make the 400 anymore.....I think either 2002 or 2001 was the last year for the 400....

 

2002 was the last year of the 400 4x4 2-stroke.i have a 02 400 2x4 and a friend has a 02 500 2x4
i can easily beat him from start to finish,the 2-stroke has way more snap to it..the 400 is close to 100 pounds lighter,and is much more fun to ride..do you really need a 4x4?that adds alot of weight also..with my 2x4 i can pretty much go anywhere i wanna go,there has been some mud hole's that have stoped me,but i really think the 4x4 would have got stuck also..i was going to get the 500 4x4 when i bought mine and im so glad i didnt..
