My '94 400L AWD disengages (indicator light turns off and front wheels disengage) unless I hold the shifter forward with my hand or foot. What should I look for? Should I open up the shifter box and look for a switch of some kind?

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Take the shifter apart and clean it all up ,add new oil.Watch out for the spring and ball in it.Or you can do the lazy thing(like I have beendoing until I get the time to take it apart)loop a bungee cord around it to the rack to hold it in.This will work for awhile but the shifter needs attention!

i have a 97 xpoler and did the same thing but mine happen to be a brken switch inside the gear selector case. i priced one at polaris and it is $115.00. i hot wire mine to turn on on the dash. if you find one cheaper i would like to know where because i need one asa well. lots of luck
Good idea on bypassing the switch in the shifter. I took my shifter apart and everything seams OK. I'm hoping if I adjust the linkage better, it will keep the switch activated, but I'm not sure it will have any affect. I doubt it will. If all else fails, I'm going to hotwire it as well.

You have excessive play in gearbox. Either replace white plastic cup under shifter or put a .020'' shim from a drive clutch spider under cup. Fixed many this way

I had this same problem this spring with my machine and at the same time I lost my neutral and reverse lites and my "AWD" and its lite. I disconnected the shift link rods from transmission to see if the arms had loosened and became mis-adjusted, there was no change, therefore, the problem was in my shifter assembly... disconnected the transmission switch wiring from board under light console. Took shift assembly out of bike, took shift linkage apart, removed the shifter mechanism from bike and put in vise, took apart the shifter mechanism slowly ( unit is under spring pressure and theres a very expensive toggle switch in there, $130.00 canadian), noticed that the detent bullets that hold the shift sliders were very worn, thereby allowing the shifter handle to be out of its centered position, and not holding the shift selector properly in forward or reverse, thats why you have to push on it to remain in foward.
Mine became bad in both forward and reverse because of the work that my bike does. I also noticed that the cup bearing (white plastic cup) was severely worn. If you don't replace this cup and let it wear to much, the shift arm ends up sitting lower in the cup, and you end up by breaking the little toggle switch ( mine was, ... which is for awd, reverse lite, neutral lite, etc...). I guess that with the constant shifting from forward to reverse and back I do so often with the bike due to the blower in winter and with the mower in summer for the last 6 or 7 yrs finally caught up..... Anyway, while I had it apart, I installed a new cup, new detent bullets and springs, new oil, and that very expensive little !@#$%^& switch.. hope this help you with your issues.
