Default How long does a 2004 Sportsman 700 take to warm up??

Just got my Sportsman 700 and it seems to take at least 10 to 15 minutes to warm up and the temp is in the mid 50's. Is this normal??? Also, if I don't sit with it pumping the throttle while it warms up (even with the choke set) it will die on me. It seems to idle VERY low even when warmed up. Should I increase the idle a bit?? Any input would be great, thanks.

kinda sucks doesn't it . my 03 is like that and so is my buddies 04. once we get into deer season(nov 15th) it gets even worse cuz the temps here are 0 to 30 degrees in the mornings. you can turn up the idle a little but you'll still have to stand next to the bike for a while. you might try rejetting, i didn't want to keep changing jets from summer to fall so i just live with it.

Up early at deer camp, dress, outside and start 03 700, back inside for warm up and biscuit, sign out for stand, nature call and then back outside to 700; ALL WARMED UP!

Know the frustration but this bike is worth the wait!!

pull the choke, start it, then push the choke back to normal. it should idle fine after that.

oh, well if i leave the choke on then it dies. so i have to pull the choke, start it, give it gas, put choke back to normal, then give it some more gas and it should idle fine.

Thanks for everyone's input.....at least I know it's normal. A BIG thanks to Pest 44 for the link (Cold blooded 700). They are talking about the exact same problem I'm having and it seems like they have the solution. I will follow the tips in that thread.

You're welcome 82nd. I bought my 03 700 in december of last year and it was very cold-blooded from the beginning. At the time, I still had my 01 HO and it was start right up w/o choke and never have to touch the throttle where the 700 had to be started a few times and the throttle held open a little. I finally got around to making the adjustment to the pilot screw over the summer. I was making a trip to colorado that required changing the main jet so I adjusted the pilot while I had the carb in hands. I just used a small drill bit to make a hole and then threaded in a sheet metal screw and pulled the brass plug out with pliers. I then made the hole just large enough for one of those very small pocket size screwdrivers to fit through and now I can adjust it without removing carb. I guess one could leave the brass plug out completely and accomplish the same convenience, but I was afraid the pilot screw may actually vibrate out. I may have to tweak it this winter b/c it hasn't been cold since the adjustment.

To get to the plug, I removed the breather box, screws holding carb to mounting bracket, mounting bracket itself, and the fuel line (remember to turn fuel off and run bike till it dies). I was then able to turn the bottom of the carb up to gain access to the brass plug. Be very careful as you drill and don't go far into the hole after it passes through the brass. The pilot screw is not too far past it.
