what to get scrambler 400 or 500

I sure do love the torque of the 500. You will never match that with the 400. The 400 will be easier to make go lots faster than the 500 ever will go. As long as the oil injection is not messed with the Polaris two stokes run great for a long time between rebuilds. A long time. I can go places the 400 can't, or can't very easily. I had the same choice as you and I picked the 500. Just a note there are still plenty of dealers with new 400 to sell. They can even have them transfered from one to another.

The thing you need to ask yourself is what type of riding do I plan to be doing.
Stock VS Stock the 500 is the better machine.
The only reason people say to get the 400 is because they respond well to Mods. This is true but there are negatives. They,(mine anyway) are more maintainance once they have been modded, always adjusting the carb or changing jetting and worrying about going lean. As for the oil injection, well if you plan to Mod most suggest to kiss that goodbye. And then you have to carry oil with you for premixing, and oh just keep the gas flowing beccause you milage is out the door. Not to mention they are only fun if you kicking *** all the time. Once you heaviliey mod it you can't really putz around because the clutching will not allow it. And the exhaust noise will start to bother you.
Bottom line the 400 is alot of fun if you do Short trail ride or dunes. or just play around on it. If you would like to take any leasure, long trail rides and really just want to enjoy you ride for the long haul go with 500.
I have 2 400 4x4s and like them ALOT, but hind sight I think I would enjoy a 500 more. As for the handling factor, I love the 4x4 handling, You can throw it into a curve and the front wheels will pull you right on out. The front end is heavier, so no it does not wheelie as well but "so what". On a tight curvy trail I would take the 4x4 over the 4x2 anytime.

thanks for all the help guys i think i am going to go with the 500 because even though i would like to think i am a mx expert i am not and really i do spend most of my time just riding around on trails and hardly ever hit a jump its just that all my buddys have raptors and banshees but i dont really like them because they dont fit my ride style but it would be nice to just once kick some yamaha butt in a drag race, but oh well it will be fun to drag there fast butts out of the mud...

Jayblazer... Don't count yourself out on drag racing with the 500 4x4 it is not a slow machine. Race a banshee on loose dirt with the 4x4 switch on and he'll be chasing you down. You'll jump out front on the start. Besides that, there are many performance mods available for the scrammy 500 4x4.

Hey jayblazer the dealer I told you about has a new leftover 2001 500 2x4 500 Scrambler too.
