Default 96 xplorer overheating

Hi, the temperature light started to come yesterday, I was just putting along, so I shut it off and waited for it to cool down, started up again 5 min. later same thing...brought it home, check the overflow tank, empty, check the radiator it was full, I haven't check the overflow in 2 years. so I don't think it's leaking...so what should I check now? thermostat? the fan was on the first time it overheated, the second it wasn't!

I tested it in the driveway, took 5 min for the light to come on, but no fan!

any help would be appreciated! THANKS

Sbishop

P.S. got a service manual today, it only goes up till a 1995, mine's a 96, engine is the same as a 95?

Why is your overflow tank empty??? You should have coolent in there. And your supposed to flush and changed the coolent every two years!!

You might check your balance shaft oil sump level, make sure the oil is not turning "milky" (waterpump seal failure - the balance shaft drives the waterpump and oil pump), also check to see if your waterpump is not starting to drip out of the "weep hole". The water pump is located in front of the rope starter where the hoses are.

I've changed my antifreeze over to the newer Dexcool (orange/red colored) - it was designed for use with aluminum and supposedly has inhibiters to prevent aluminum corrosion as well as additives to protect seals, besides it is a 5 year antifreeze vs. the 2 year of the green stuff.

Well I found some antifreeze at the left bottom side on the skid plate, looks to me like the hose, can I replace it with a different hose? not a polaris one? Thanks for the help

The front of the radiator was nice and clean, I put it in the mud much!

Good deal - I think Polaris gets $13 for that hose.
