Hi fellas,

About a month ago I was down in Wayne National Forest. There was an ugly green and yellow utility quad that was just ROARING up and down one of the access roads. This thing sounded like a supercharged or turbocharged monster. It sounded really good. Anyway, we got to talking with the owner about it. The owner was very cool, he was telling us about his past and present rides and practically made each of us ride his quad. The quad was a Prarie 650 with cut fenders. It was supposed to be stock other than that. I took it for a spin and it was a very fast quad. Not only was it fast, but everything about it was smooth, steering, braking, etc. I was dying to know if it was faster than my scrammy so I asked him if he would race. We lined up 5 times. First race, I got the jump, he caught up but did not pass me. Second, third, and forth races he jumped out by a quad and pulled 3 or 4 quads in about 75 - 100 yards. On the fifth run he gave me a huge head start, maybe six bikes. At the end of the race he came around me like I was on the brakes. In the final race, his quad seemed to be much more powerful than the other races. We raced in 2wd, 4wd, in the gravel, and on beat up pavement. I felt my quad would have done better with a better surface, but I am sure that he had traction problems also.

I want to know, do you guys think his quad is stock. My scrammy has a white bros pipe, jet kit, and K&N for performance mods. I raced a piped 400ex that only beat me by 4-5 bikes in a 75-100 yard race. This Prarie was faster than that, easily. I have not set my valve lash since I bought my '00 scrammy this summer. If this has never been done, maybe I am down a few ponies.

I have a mental problem, I like to be the fastest wherever I go. What modifications would give my scrammy the edge in a situation like the above story? Has anyone done a 700 sp motor swap into their scrammy? I would like power, but I don't want to sacrifice reliability, Wayne will eat you up.

I know of a guy that put a SP700 motor in an 00 Scram 500. He didn't handle thta well, and it wasn't any faster. BUT, it had monster low end torque. I would recommend a clutch kit from HPD. It will really help get you out of the hole faster. And I doubt he was all stock. Something had to have been done. Also, of you valve adjustment is out of spec, it can reduce the performance of the machine

 

What year model did the HO come out? I've raced two other scramblers when mine was stock and won by 2 or 3 quad lengths in 300ft. Not sure of the year model of these two I raced. I also raced a 700 prairie when mine was stock, we ran pretty close but he did get me by less than a quad in one race.

he had to have been modded pretty good to beat you that bad..a friend of mine has a 03 prarie 650 and it wont keep up with another friends 400ex or my 400 scrambler,its pretty much neck2neck with our other friends 500 2x4 scrambler and they are both stock..the supercharge sound you hear comming from the 650 is the clutches and belt setup.when my friend takes off you cant even hear the machine reving up all you hear is belt,i hate the way they sound...
