'96 Sport 400L-Stupid light bulb question
#1
I've got my '96 400 sport headlight bulb needing replaced. How the heck do you change the bulb? The outer glass cover is cracked and when I start to separate if from the housing/frame it begins to crack more. It seems like the seal is very strong. Is that how I replace the bulb by removing the headlight? Has to be...right? Geez I feel stupid! Guess I'll have to buy a bulb and headlight now!

I had mine crack on my 96 sport and there is no way of replacing just the bulb, you have to buy the whole light. It is expensive too, if i remember right it was like 40 dollars. anyway that is all i know. Brad

Thanks Brad. Pure Polaris, I really like the 400 sport. Has great power, you can buy alot of accessories for them, and it helps when you find these things when people are needing money bad-makes a great deal on them.

If you are just replacing the headlight bulb, there should be a rubber "boot" on the back of the headlight assembly. Pull the boot back, and it will expose the back of the bulb, which is held in place by a locator "dimple" and a very small screw (if I remember correctly, on my old '96 sport 400, the screw also held the ground wire in place?). Remove the screw, and the bulb should just pop out from the back. You can get a new bulb from any auto parts store. It should be a 55 watt halogen "H3" type bulb. It probably won't have the same electrical contacts on it that the factory bulb has, so you will have to fab something up, or just remove the contacts and splice wires where necessary. Don't forget to re-install the boot before you splice any wires, and I'm sure you already know this, but don't touch the glass portion of the new bulb.....the oil from your fingers will cause the bulb to prematurely fail (heat). Hope this helps.
