About 18 months ago I was test driving a few quads at a Polaris dealership with a friend. I test drove a 500 Magnum RMK, 400 Sportsman & a 500 HO Sportsman. Now I already own a Polaris Xpedition 425 (same cc's as the 400 sportsman) which I like very much. But after riding these quads over the same trails this is what I thought. The 400 & 500 absolutely killed the Magnum in the comfort area. The magnum rides like mine, very nice, until you ride the IRS of a Sportsman. The 500 Magnum was a little more powerful than the 400 Sportsman but not enough to pick it over the Sportsman's ride. The real problem was the 500 HO. It had a ton more power than the rest. So much more it's hard to believe it until you experience it yourself. You can notice it thruout the power band. Low end, midrange, uphills & top end. It was the first time I wish I had paid a little more and got the 500 HO over my Xpedition. Needless to say my friend bought the 500 HO.
go test ride 'em somewhere over the same trails. It was very clear to me, my next quad will be the 500 HO.
don't quote me on these
325cc Magnum approx 20 HP
425cc Sportsman approx 27 HP
500cc Sportsman/ Magnum approx 32 HP
500cc HO Sportsman approx 38+ HP

The 500 H.O. uses the same base Engine as the Scrambler 500, but changed a little. so you know it definetly will outpower the older 500's like my '98 Sportsman. polaris claims 30% increas of power at the crank over the older version. so yes the H.O. is the more powerful atv. i like mine the way it is, but i might get one of the new H.O.'s anyway, they are nice.
