Default 2004.5 Sportsman 400 Problems

ktmguy,

Sounds like you about got it! I would be satisfied with mine if my plug wasn't so white (lean). have you adjusted your pilot screw any? Mine is behind a brass plug. I think the '04 is exposed. I wonder if that would help richen my midrange and down. Where we ride is around 900' elevation.

Thanks for the info!

IM riding at 940' So seems we are REALLY close. IM gonna look at my needle this evening I think. Turning the Air screw In theory would help, by introducing more air into the Mixture. I havent looked at mine yet.
Regardless, Like I said I think we are getting close and at least we know now its not something disatrously wrong, just some fine tuning.
Im gonna kkep an I on my plug this week, pull it a couple times. Something Else Im gonna try is to run it at nothing but 1/2 /3/4 throttle and then check the plug and see what it looks like. If its Blck, then Again the midrange is rich, and I may be able to lean it out and then richen the main as suggested. So we shall see. I'll Keep posting

Are you saying that you want EBS. I put the Heel Clicker clutch in my 400 and did the ratio change adjustment on my secondary clutch that pretty much gives it EBS properties. You might check that out.

The heelclicker is one of the best bang for the buck you can get especially for the 400 as it needs al the help you can get.
I can pull wheelies in Low, WITHOUT body english, and In High by Leaning way back. Now If I can get this Carb straightened out.
Trailrider where did you end upw with your jetting? Im thinking of messing with the Needle.. Mine seems to be burning o.k according to the plug, but it still FEELS a little rich, under a load its not cutting out but gets a real deep exhaust tone to it.

Who knows, havent adjusted or even looked at the needle yet, but Im on a 162.5 main.. seems to help a great deal, just dont feel its 100% right. maybe about 94%..

My atv came with ebs...Just can not find a clutch kit for a 400 Sportsman with ebs...The DYNO-JET kit comes with a new needle and six different jets...You can tune your atv to your liking ..Sure made a big difference in mine..
