Default Better gas milage on a 500 than a 400...go figure

Just go back from a fun fill weekend ride with three buddies. We did a 35 mile ride in all types to terrain on Sat. and the gas milage was a puzzle to me. I burned 2.1 gal on my 98 SP500. Another guy burned 2.3 gal on a 2002 SP400. Another burned 2.4 bal on a 2004 SP400. We had a Outlander 400 along that burned 2.0. What gives with this...... I would think my 500 would burn more than a 400 on the same ride. We all drive the same and were with each other every step of the way. All bikes are bone stock except for a KN filter on mine. Any thoughts?

Some times a smaller motor will have to work a little harder then a bigger one, thus useing more gas. So with both the sp400 and sp500 weighing about the same, the 400 would work harder to move it. The Outlander is lighter so doesn't need to work as hard.
