To go along with all the great info the others posted, your stock stator is in fact a 150 watt unit. If you take the 150 watts and divide that by 12 (for it being a 12 volt system), you get 12.5 amps total system output. A 35 watt light is gonna draw 2.9 amps ea., while a 55 will draw 4.6 amps ea.. You can see where you could run into problems quickly. Ricky Stator for around $75 has a 250 watt stator that is a great mod. Then you never have to worry about juice again. Those Moose lights Mudmaster mentioned are some pretty compact and durable units.
