sportsman 500 question??
What year sportsman? There is a drain plug on the tank and the filter you can get at Polais, NAPA or use a WIX(Napa # 1358, Wix 51358). I prefer the NAPA or WIX Filters. You need to use 0w40 wt synthetic that you can get at Polaris or use the AMS Oil 0w40. You need 2 quarts. The is a plug that holds about a cup that is under the right side of the engine, almost behind the foot brake and it is a bugger to get out. It can be done but if your not that mechanical then forget that one, it is only a cup of oil. Now if you sank it in water then get busy. Your supposed to take out the screen in the tank clean and then reprime the oil pump. I wouldn't do this all the time but once in awhile just to see what is in the screen. I think it takes 2 quarts emptying the extra cup.

To add to xcrider's post. The Napa Gold filter is made by Wix. That is what I use. In addition to the Amsoil 0W-40, you can also run Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic "European car formula". The screen I wouldn't worry to much about. I did mine once and it was clean. But, I would definately do the crankcase. It isnt that hard to get at if you drop the skid plate.

sportsman 500 question??
I just changed the oil on both my 400 and 500. It was quite easy. I looked around for the cheapest option (i.e., Wal-Mart, etc.), cause I'm a cheap *** and Polaris gets you coming and going. However to my astonishment, I ended up going to my local Polaris dealer and bought an oil change kit - it was actually about the same price as Wal-Mart, except it contained a screw on funnel, 2-gaskets, and instructions.
