While I have this thing in pieces I was going to remove the starter if it dosnt work. I know they go bad frequently, and this motor is new to me so I am not sure if it works. If it does I am going to leave it on.

Anyway, question is, can i hook a battery straight to it for just a second to see if it spins? Will this cause any trouble?

Yes you can. It wont hurt anything. Just hook the positive and negative terminals to the positive and negative on the battery. Most of the time, the brushes in the starters go bad or get corroded. I just rebuilt mine from a kit off of ebay for $35
