I have a 2000 Trail Blazer, but when i push the electric start button it makes a real loud sqealing noise but the engine will still start, and i don't know what is wrong with it. So i was wondering if anybody could help me out.

 

I have a 98 polaris 400L sprot and mine does the same thing sometimes. what the problem is is that the bendix drive in the starter is starting to go bad. for a quick fix of the problem. is to take apart the starter and spray it all down with brake fluid cleaner or wd 40. while its apart you should also change the brushes they are only like five dollars and very easy to do. I take apart the started like once or twice a year. depends on how much i use it. but it still starts with or without the annoying sound. To replace the started is like 300 dollars and to me its not worth it id rather put the money into modifications.

The starter motors are usually pretty durable, its usually the bendix that gives people problems.
Pull the pull start (recoil housing) off.. In there you will find the starter Bendix. pull it out, and CAREFULLY disassemble it. Clean everything, if there are any rust pits or burrs, take care of them with some light sand paper or a dremel tool. While you have the recoil housing off, look for signs of water entering the housing.

I'm having a similar problem:
When my Quad sits for awhile( week or so),
the starter will not start the engine, but it
cranks right up when i use the pull starter. After the initial start, it will start using the elec starter, unless it sits for a while.

 

Lope: Battery probably isn't holding a charge. Have you checked the water level?

 

what is the bendix is it the smaller gear that is coming out of the starter??? My starter will not start and as of now my atv is in a million parts it is going to the shop tomm but I would still like to clean it before it goes
