I use to have the same problem on my 2000 xplorer when spinning my rear tire in 2 wheel drive one of the front hubs would engage ,it started happening when the quad had about 1500 miles on it ,on my quad it would engage so hard that it would bend the front drive shaft (not cheap),what was happening on mine was the armature plates in the front hubs where getting flat spots wore on them and this was causing the hub to engage at high rpm wheel spin ,I use to replace these armature plates every 1000 miles or so ,they are cheap I think about $5 a piece and I never had the problem again ,as for why it was wearing flat spots on the armature plates I don"t know (maybe bad bearings )but just replacing these plates fixed the problem for me.

Default 4-wheel drive problems

I was noticing that when I switched out of AWD to 2WD that I would sometimes be pulling hard to the right. I would stop back up and resume and all was fine. I later checked the hub fluid and I think both were empty! So we added fluid, in a week or two it is going to get replaced with new hub oil. Just because it is cheep and I think it needs to be done. I am in the process of replacing all of the fluids in my ATV as it is.
