When the engint 'went tight', was it warmed up. I have heard of the 400s cold siezing from being warmed up too fast. It happens when the piston gets hot before the cylinder does. It happens because it takes a little while to warm up the water jacket. Doesn't have to really be rammed around either, just put under load too fast. This is worse with a new engine. Also, what kind of oil were you using. Some is not compatible with the Polaris oil in the tank & will react with it & form a kind of gummy sludge. If this happens, your engine doesn't have long to live. Just a thought
