Default Close ratio tranny question?

I think the more important thing with the close ratio is that you don't lose as much rpm and hp between shifts. I also think it may reduce shifting by being able to recover better in mis-shifts or wrong gear situiations. Lastly it may be easier to speed shift (or whatever it's called.)

I think there were basically three versions of the speed shift idea.

1. No clutch, WOT.
2. Clutch, WOT
3. No clutch, closed throttle
The way I followed it #1 was real bad. #2 and 3 Most guys had no problems with, but it was arguable.

So far the only experience I've seen with a close ratio is drag racing. I can see why this works, but how well does it work on the trails? Drag racing and trail racing are totally different.

If it works the way I think it will, I can see many positives. On open runs you will have good consistent power like a drag. On steep hill climbs the rpms should not drop off as steep between gears. If you miss a shift or are bound up where shifting might be difficult you can get by. Dropping gears to slow down won't over rev you or throw you over the handlebars or pop the front end up.

The amount of shifting with the close ratio's won't neccessarily be any more than the regular trans. Depending on the type of trail it may actually be less. With the wide 1-2 gap on the standard you may find on some trails 1st isn't high enough and second is to high so you would be shifting more. With the close ratio trans you could stay in second....
