Default 00-02 srambler 400 2x4 vs 02 scrambler 500 2x4.

subject sums it up am thinking of picking up a scrambler 2x4 to be a sport quad and to modify lightly. which one of these would be a better quad from a performance prospective. I am thinking the 400 as it is two stroke but don't know if the extra displacement will out way this as the 500 look sto be 4 stroke from my research.

on the 500 I would be willing to do jets filter box mods and pipe, posiible a cam but not likely.

on the 400 I would be willing to do pipe filter box mods reeds. I could not find any jet setups for this, I dfon't know much about two strokes yet.

since im willing to put some money into these and I have a 1985 es 250bigred utility machine im looking for an all out runner.

all and any hewlp is appreciated. I was going to get a blaster but it looks like a crambler will kill one.

Sonce you already plan on modding it, definately get the 400. It will responds much better to mods for a lot less $$$. The 500 definately has more grunt than the 400, but the 400 will take the 500 when it comes down to modding them both

I also found a new card for the 400 id get as well any one else have any opinions.

how much more work is two stroke mantainence, I also like working on engines so it shouldn;t be a big deal just wondering what you have to do to a 2stroke you don't to a 4 stroke.

Well, generally speaking, 4 strokes last longer than 2 strokes. However, the 2 strokes have less moving parts and are simpler to work on. They usually need the top end rebuilt every couple of years, but can longer. They dont require the valve adjustments and oil changes that the 4 strokes do though.

I agree on the 400. You can get more Hp out of one for less $$. But both are good quads.

I have a 500 4x4 and my buddy has a 400 2x4. If we race from a stop or from a roll the 400 will come out on top every time. Although mine is heavier so that is a disadvantage for me. His is mostly stock except for a silencer (stock pipe) and a filter. I have a pipe and a clutch. I can get him off the line because he is trying to keep the tires from spinning and the front end down. He usually catches up with me and pulls about 1/2 to full quad length ahead. But once we get into the trails and the mud I am always waiting for him or pulling him out. Last time we went riding, he got stuck pretty bad right in front of me. So I got down in the hole with him and pushed him out while in 4 wheel drive. So if I were going to mod a 500 or a 400, I would probably do a 400 for less money.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Mod the 400 you will have a screamer mod the 500 and you get a torque monster. So they are totally differant animals and you will need to decide what you want.
