Default Sportsman 600 Acceptable warm up time?

My wife's 2004 SP 600 starts right up when cold, (obviously with choke) however, it seems to require 7 to 8 minutes of warm up time before it will run without hesitation in the low RPM ranges.

Example:
Last Night I started the quad with the ambient temperature about 58 degrees. Full choke, bike started right up, half choke for a minute or two, and the quad would stay idleing without any choke, BUT, if I tried to move the quad at all, as soon as the motor hits about 1300RPM it studders and tries to stall, once you give it enough throttle to get it up around 1800 RPM the motor is smooth as silk. Once the quad has been run for 7 to 8 minutes this condition goes away.

Now, my 700 efi doesn't exhibit this problem, I know due to the fuel injection, BUT, my 2000 Honda 400EX in the same conditions will start half choke, if I stab the throttle 5 to 6 times, and take the choke off, I can put it in first gear, and off I go, NO hesitation at all with the carberator.

I can understand the hesitation for 7 to 8 minutes if the ambient temperature is 30 degrees or below, but when it's almost 60 degrees, something is wrong.

Any ideas on what I should do? I'm not very handy, so outside of asking the dealer to rejet it, I'm out of ideas. I'd think that a six month old quad would be fine with the stock jetting, the bike hasn't had any modifications besides the installation of rack extenders and a bumper......

Thanks
Chris

There is a service bulletin for a carb update on the 2003 600 for this problem, but I'm not sure if it applies to the 2004 model.

The service bulletin does apply to some of the 04's. It sounds just like the problem I was having with my 03 and the bulletin fixed it. Call your dealer. It'll only get worse as the outside temps drop.

the 600 needs plenty of time to warm up i would give it that 7 min to warm up whether it is warm out or not....the metal parts still need to get to 500 degrees or so....just a thought...

Thanks for the reply's. Do you happen to know the service bulletin number?

As for the 7 minute warm up time, I know the motor needs to have the oil warm enough to ride it hard, but I'd expect to be able to back it out of the garage without stalling it when the motor is cold. As I stated earlier, my 700EFI, or my old 400EX was capable of that.

Thanks again!

Chris

If you're a do-it-yourself'er, here's a link to a web page that has scans of the actual bulletin - pics 9 & 10.

I have a 04 600 and it did the exact same thing.Once I had the carb update the problem went away. Also there is a oil line update as well for the bike.Polaris covered the cost of both updates with the bike being out of warrenty.
