Default i plan on checking my front brakes(pads) on my scrambler.......

and well, i have no idea what im doing to be honest. I had the shop do my rear ones a few months ago and i would like to check my front pads to see if they need replaceing. Once I remove the tire, what do I do next? if they need to be replaced is there anything I need to know? im assuming that to check the pads i would have to remove them, and I can put them back the same way?

thanks!

I don't remember how they come out exactly......seems like there is a small pin holding them in or something, anyways get the pads out, however they come out. and look them over to see if there is any pad left or it is just metal showing.....if there isn't much pad or none at all, better replace them. When you take them out, you might have to take a screwdriver and carefully pry the caliper off of the pads(releasing the pressure)......once you get them out, make sure you don't hit the brake lever, or it will throw the caliper past the o-ring and start leaking fluid....not that big of a deal, but leaves a mess and you loose fluid. This isn't that hard of a job, you kinda need to just tear into it and then ask questions if you have troubles......its pretty hard to explain otherwise(us explaining it might just make it harder).......go give it a try, and come back if you have troubles.

If you need a parts diagram, to tell how thing go together, look here.......www.partsland.com

I agree with bradracer, go for it. Don't be scared, just pay attention to what you take off, how you got it off, and what order it went. If I haven't done it before I lay a piece of cardboard next to me and place everything on it in the order I took it off with the bolts in or near the parts they go to. Sometimes you need to unbolt the caliper, to get pads off, but I don't think you do in this aplication. I think he was right that it is the clip pin that holds them in, but be VERY careful if you do pry it out! If you have to pry hard there is something wrong.

Changing pads on your quad is easier than changing the oil!

thanks guys i did it today and have a question. I removed 2 bolts to remove the caliper and then i had to remove a alienhead screw from the caliper to release the pads. I did not know how tight this should be, so i left a very small bit of play on it (I used the other wheel as a guide to see how tight it was) is this good or should this be as tight as possiable?

question 2: I notice that the pads touched a little bit, even on the other tire that i did not touch. ie, if you spun the wheel you can hear the pads sligtly rubbing. I then jacked up the rear and it was the same thing. Is this normal?

thanks!

a shop manual will take all of the guesswork out of it

money well spent

as far as the front brakes go

do one side at a time,,,,,so you have something to compare as you work

front pad wear limit is .150",,,,new is .275"

you will need a c-clamp to compress the piston if you replace the pads

and be sure the dust boots are seated properly and not ripped

Are you familiar with how to blead the front brakes?

yeah you should check your pads about every 1000 miles(thats what my dealer recommended) so i checked mine and one of the pads was litteraly worn in half.
