Three points.

1) CVT stands for continuously variable transmission not constant

2) To understand how you get an infinite number of ratios, you have to realize that there are no defined "steps" as the pulley moves in and out. It's not that you have an infinite range, but you have an infinite number of ratios within the range. Every billionth of an inch (and even less) that the belt moves up or down in either the drive or driven clutch creates a ratio that is technically different from where the belt just was. Just as the volume control on your stereo might have 10 clicks or it might just rotate smoothly through it's range creating an infinite number of possible positions that it ends up in when you stop turning it.

3) The big benefit of a properly tuned cvt (check out some snowmobile drags) is that it can be set up to allow the engine to maintain a specific rpm while the clutch shifts seamlessly. Rather than have the rpm's rise and fall as you're shifting through gears. In a properly setup drag machine, nailing the gas causes the engine to almost immediately rev to it's max hp rpm and then hang right there throughout the run while the cvt does all the work of accelerating the machine. On a street vehicle like the Nissan Murano, the cvt allows the engine to spend more time at it's most efficient rpm while the transmission responds to changing load and speed requirements.
Excellent response to this thread and possibly the best simple explanation I've ever read.

By the way also, I think in the very beginning that EAB tried to show how the "mouse system" works at least with a picture.

Thanks, Bubba!

Here's a video for anyone who has no idea how fast snowmobiles can really go. It should be noted that this is a radar run for top speed and that drag sleds will actually accelerate off the line even quicker. They're ridiculous on asphalt but I haven't been able to find a video clip yet.

I just noticed that I now have 666 posts. I may never post ever again 666 was my number when I drove demo derbys. You know....The Number Of The Beast

I looked and looked but couldnt find it: on polaris's site, one of their videos shows the transmission operating with the clutch cover off, for those not ready to do it themselves. Like i said though, i just watched almost every one, but didnt see it, i remeber it though. it was a polaris video because it had a polaris disclaimer across the bottom "do not try at home". Anyways, maybe someone else might have more luck

the easiest way to see it is to lift the seat of a golf cart, and push the gas... try it next time your in a golf course...theres no cover so its open for the world to see.

Wow Lukester, the colors of your 2003 really are a lot nicer than the 2004. I didn't realize the change until I looked at your photos. Nice quad.

BryceGTX,

You are very kind. I like the colors of the Scrambler. I wish I had one of them! The Boss does good until then I guess. The Boss really does take the abuse. The RCR Stage One Kit woke it up big time. I have not had any probs with this machine. Get some pic's up so we can see your ride too.

Best, Lukester

I'm going to speak up along with Lukester ... I think the Tboss is great. Bought one for my 15 year old son. His first quad ever. It has got more than enough of what's needed to have fun out on the trails.
