Default Polaris Sportsman 400 oil screen

New Sportsman 400 04 in changing the oil found the oil screen fitting impossible to remove ..wrench suggestions???
Are there several grease fittings on the drive shaft?
Is 8lb of tire pressure OK? or should I use mfg 5lb suggestion?

Any other hints...
Thanks

Be careful when removing the fitting on your oil tank. I cracked my oil tank trying to remove it. After talking to Polaris mechanics they seem to think inspecting / cleaning this screen is unnecessary. This screen is so poris (large holes) it would only catch larger particles such as pieces of piston etc. in which case you would have other more important issues to deal with at that point. If you do decide to inspect / clean this screen I would probably take the oil tank loose from the atv and then remove the the fitting with the screen on it. This fitting comes from factory with Locktite on it which made mine impossible to remove while on the atv. It was real difficult to remove even when the oil tank out of the atv.

hope that helps...

I wasnt able to remove mine until I got my hands on an impact wrench. I also have the aluminum tank instead of the newer plastic ones. But, either way, I saw nothing on my screen. If you do remove it or the line, remember to purge the air out of the system

I put the minie grinder to one of my good sockets and cut a notch in it to fit over the fitting. Took it off, nothing on the screen. If you are careful when adding oil that nothing but oil goes in the tank you should never have to take it off, the oil filter should look after the rest.....

I tried to take mine a couple weeks ago during a complete fluid change through out. No go! I knew I would crack that tank long before it budged so I just left it. I did however remove the oil line and read in the service manual that I had to reprime by pinching the oil vent line. How do you know if you have successfully done so? They mention something about hearing air when releasing the line. I never heard squat! I have the machine up at my duck blind now and have run it for a couple hours on and off. For the first hour or so I had these bad thoughts about the oil not circulating and frying the motor. I assume after the running in 12" water/mud in the rice fields would have cooked it off by now.....I hope??

Yeah, you should hear a gasp of air after you release the line. Hold it for about 30 seconds. Do it a few times to be sure

The book says 10-15 seconds I think. I did it a couple times using some needle nose vice grips. I just never heard anything with the motor running. Thanks BBS!

Hi all
I have a 04.5 400 sportsman and have never cleaned the screen. Like you all I tried but thought it would break the tank so I left it alone. I used to clean it in the old 335 and it never got dirty so I won't be worrying about the new one. The bike now has 375 hours on it in 12 months and is still going strong. I change the oil every 50 hours and use caltex synthetic oil and a baldwin b1402 filter. To save pulling the plug out on the engine on the right side to drain the remaining oil, I drain the oil in the tank then run the bike at idle till the oil just stops coming out the tank drain hole and no longer. Saves a lot of mucking around. Haven't had any pump priming problems yet.
Cheers all
