Belt Dust ???
#1
Okay..2000 Trail Blazer..From day one I have had a black dust similiar to front wheel brake dust on your car coming out from under the seat and getting all over the body work around the tank. Like brake dust it is very dificult to remove. The pre-filter on the air cleaner snorkel is also hard to clean do to this sooty dust. My dealer told me that is " belt dust " and all Polaris's have this dust. Some more than others. Mine is in the "more than others class". The quantity of dust has become somewhat less after my 80 plus hours of usage. However the sooty dust is still there. I have covered the area around the air box to minimize the dust getting to the body plastic, but the pre-filter still gets exceptionally dirty and being a "keep it clean nut" I would like to eliminate this so called belt dust. So, after all of my explaantion, 1) Is it belt dust and 2) any suggestions on how to get rid of it. 3) Or, will it eventually go away on its own. I will appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks..

It does sound like belt dust to me. But I currently own my 2nd and 3rd Polari and ride with many others and have never seen this. Is has probably slowed due simply to the belt wear. I don't know what to suggest, but you may be replacing belts more often than normal too.

I have the same problem. We have two TB 325's. My wifes rarely gets real dirty from it: however, mine is "sooty" after each ride. It seems like the harder I ride, the dirtier it gets and man is it hard to get off the seat!! I'm guessing harder usage equals more dust. I know I ride more "jerky" (fast/slow/fast) than my wife (smooth, but fast) which is probabley harder on the belt.

It may be wise to pull the cover and have a look something may be rubbing or the seal is not in the groove properly on top. Letting the dust blow all over instead of out the exhaust. I have never had any problem, new or new belts. There`s not even that much dust inside the cover. HTH

Duneman09,
That sounds pretty funny. I'm getting this picture in my head of an atv with this black dust cloud surrounding it kind of like that kid on Charlie Brown.
I have never experienced what you're talking about, except for when I would get water in the belt housing. When I would put the bike in neutral and blow the water out, the water would be black, and the stuff would stain the overflow bottle and anything else it go on. It always washed off, but I imagine it is hard to get off of white. You could try to reroute the tranny vent to some location that is further away from the seat area. Good luck!!!

I get some dust from my sp500. It comes out the exhaust for the belt housing and is deposited on my coolant overflow bottle. It comes off when I pressure wash it. I don't know if it has done all the time, but I didn't notice it till about 700 miles.
Maybe you could use some sort of foam filter for the exhaust for the belt to cut down on the dust? I imagine it would have to be cleaned real regularly, but shouldn't be a problem for a keep it clean kinda guy. :-) Then again it might cause heat build up in the belt area
