Rusty Sp700 rims
#1
I have read a lot about the chrome rims on the Sp600/700 rusting. Is it as bad of a problem as it seems? Most importantly, do the painted black wheels (found on the Camo Green model) rust just as easy?

I have a rusting problem on my 600's chrome rims too. Especially around the rolled part of the wheel. Its a pain and my dealer wouldn't cover it while it was under warranty. My dad has the camo 700 with the black rims and I havn't noticed any rust at all. I still the think the chrome looks better than the black though.

i've owned both.
i've subjected both wheels to road salt and didn't wash them off until Spring. the only cleaning they get in the Winter is flying through the deep snow.
my chrome wheels were pitted and just starting to rust. very scarry. on the other hand, my black steel wheels were perfect.
if you chip paint on a black wheel, it's very easy to touch it up. wammo, perfect again! not true with chrome.
i think a black wheel only looks good on a yellow, green or camo ATV. i think the silver painted rims look good on red or blue. the chrome wheels look great but i've found them to require more maintenance. and i'm not willing to give them all that attention.

Keep a coat of wax on them and they won't rust. Chromed steel will rust if not kept clean and waxed, chrome cleaner will remove surface rust but if it's pitted you waited to long, the pits are permanent......

The only problem is in the rolled part because its hard to get to. Just spray a little wd 40 in there every now and then and forget about it, nobody sees it anyways but you. Use some sos or steel wool too.

my aluminums dont rust
but i have the black rims on my old 500 H.O. the rims on that are coming up on 5 years old this summer, and theres only 1 rust spot on them and its been through hell and back. but once you start seeing rust, try to get rid of it with steel wool, and if its too deap to get rid of with that, you need new rims.

if your rims start to rust... use steel wool like mentioned above to free the rust... then clean the area and use osme clear enamal spray paint and cover the area and even the rim itself... ive found this to work really well
