Try removing a shim from behind the secondary clutch and see if the belt goes down. Make sure that there is at least 1 shim still there though. The belt should be about 1/8" above the secondary clutch

the belt seem to be riding high on the outside of the 2ndary.. So wouldn't I want to add a shim? my new belt will be here tomorrow then I plan on taking it and having the polaris people check the alignment.. unless the alignment tool isnt' very expensive.. then I will just order it for myself..

Yes, you would want to add a shim if it is on the outside. I believe that the alignment tool is like $35. Hot Seat Performance and EPI carry them

Your clutches may be worn out. It may be time for at least new springs. If the springs are worn it will make it act like it is in hi gear all the time. This would put a lot of stress and heat on the belt. A clutch kit would include most the parts needed to fix your problem. There are some bearings in the primary that may need attention as well.

All right.. Took it to the dealer today... and had them check the alignment.. it was only 20 bucks.. so I let them do it.. and it is aligned perfectly. nothing looks bad.. I was there and watched the whole thing. everything worked like it should be working... soooooo.... now what to look for? i put a new belt on the thing and will ride it some more. but anyone else out there have anything I Can check? they did say the primary clutch is almost due for some attention.. will that cause the belt to be eaten out on one side??

See my above post. When the quad is not loaded(like on a stand) it will look as if the clutches are operating normally. It's not until it is under full load that you will see the weakness of both the primary and secondary springs. They will shift out too early and shift in too late.

so where would a guy pick up a rebuild kit? and is it the main spring that one would need to replace? or are there several springs in the thing??

A clutch kit would come with new springs and weights and Helix (depending on the kit) There are only 2 springs (primary and secondary).

If you don't have a manual get one. RCR would be a good place to look for a clutch kit. They are easy to install. The secondary can be tricky and is best done with two people. You could even take it off and have the dealer install the new spring. If you just want new stock springs for the primary and secondary the dealer is just as good an option. Check for wear in the primary bushings and bearings. They are parts 7 and 6 in this shematic .
They tend to wear and cause the primary to hang up and stick. The buttons also can groove the towers they ride against.
