Glacier Plow Electric Lift
#1
Hello:
I just purchased a 2005 Sportsman 400 with the Glacier Plow system (with 60" 2 Way Razor). I am totally impressed of its plowing capabilities. When I purchased the Glacier Plow system, I went the cheap route and bought the electric lift option instead of the Warn winch. My reasoning was that for the uses that I have planned for the ATV, the Warn winch was an over kill. The thing that I don't like is that the cable for the electric lift on the plow attaches to a mounting strap on the ATV. Just after one use, I notice that the stitching on the strap is starting to fray. It doesn't appear to me that this strap is going to last very long. Does anyone else have any kind of experience with this set up? Does anyone know of any other type of mount that can be used to attach the cable from the electric lift to?
Thanks, Keith

I have plowed with mine all winter so far and my strap looks fine so far. You could also take some 3/16 cable (with vinyl cover) and clamps to make up something that won't pull apart. I am guessing that the strap would probably have quite a bit of stress if your holding your plow raised up to cut some hard/heavy snow.

Thanks for your response. I will have my dealer get me a new strap, but I think I'm going to look to do something different for the long-term. When I was deciding between a winch or the electric lift, my dealer told me it took about 4 hours to install a winch and was a difficult project and not for the DIY'er. I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere that Polaris changed this on the 2005 Sportsmans that made winch installation much easier. Does anyone know this to be true and if so how much easier is it to install the winch?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

If you use your winch for lifting the plow take of the 50' of cable and make up another one that is about 6' long. The problem is with the 50' is it is spooling only a couple of feet as you raise and lower the plow. The cable will start to snag and strands of cable will break loose on the part that closest to the hook. With the 6' it will work fine and then when plowing seasons over put back on the 50' cable.
That is why I went with the electric lift. No regrets at all.
The 2005 has a lot of the wiring done for the winch but you will have to cut out the cover to fit around the winch/fairlead. It is still a job but well worth it. Take your time and do it right.
