Default Running a 400 on Premix - Disabling the oil pump

Is it OK to do this?

I think it's a better idea in terms of reliability, as you don't need to worry about the oil pump dying. The reason mine originally died is because the oil pump failed and the engine seized.

Can anyone give me a good reason not to do this?

Any recommendations for a good mix ratio for utility work? (Carrying loads and towing a small trailer - pretty slowly over flatish ground).

40 to 1 is what I mix at. you can buy a oil injection block off plate, or with some minor fabricating skills make one your self. I did it more for weight then reliability, its of course more reliable to pre- mix, but the pumps usually don't fail.

you are only the second person I have seen that has had a failure problem, I wouldn;t trust it in your position either.

The other thing is that the person who stripped the engine down, before he gave it to me, lost the wheel off the end of the oil pump spindle... unless anyone has a second hand one with the pin lying around, I don't fancy paying for a new one anyway!!

Its a pretty easy job to do. I think hot seats block off kit is $30 give or take.

Like the others stated, easy mod. You'll notice the difference in handling with that mongo oil tank gone too. 40:1 with good old Polaris blue non-synthetic.

My oil pump failed once too, It cost me about $200. I had to rebuild the whole top end. So now i just mix my gas, and put a block off thing on the oil inlet tube on my carburetor.

Thanks guys, some useful tips there.

I can't get hold of Polaris oil, so what's the best alternative? I was thinking something like Rock Oil synthetic or Castrol.
