Default 800 sportsman gas hog!!!!!!!!

i just read this thread for the first time. i didn't realize the 800 was so hard on fuel. my 700EFI compares very closely to a 500. i'm very pleased with the power PLUS economy.

thinking about buying 27" Outlaws. kinda wonder what impact those will have on gas! LOL!!

I know it is kinda late but here is my take on that product. It is dirt cheap. You get to use it as a table if needs be and between the parents and friends, we have about 5 of them. Only one leaked from the vent after it was dropped. Kolpin replaced it with a brand new one, no questions asked. Besides the parents have experimented with more than 10 gas carriers without finding one that didn't leak. After we switched to that one, we haven't had a leak problem unless you consider the time I forgot to close the vent before puting it on the machine.

Why does a ATV get such poor MPG when a car lets say the toyota echo which is a 4cyl and it gets 60MPG and has to haul more weight and has more power and a 800 twin Sportsman or any big ATv for that matter gets such poor MPG . I mean come on I know there is a diff in terrian but really when you think about it does not make alot of sense at least to me. The ATV manufactures must have a deal with the big oil companys. I know some are gonna say terrian has lot to do with it but put them both on a dirt road travelling the same speed.
Dont get me wrong I would still enjoy ATVing at 5mpg but there must be technology out there maybe that is what they should be focused on first.
Sorry for ranting I just felt the need to express my thoughts thanx for listening
Well I can answer that question for you with a quickness. Our quads use a very ineffecient belt drive system for our tranmissions. I would hazard to guess that if we dumped the belt drive and went with a manual tranny and clutch setup we would almost double our fuel economy.

Another point is power costs in fuel. The more power you use/want the more fuel your going to burn.
I don't at all think the drive system is all that inefficient at all, it's in the gearing itself. These quads are geared completely different, to run at maximum low end power at the sacrafice of top end speed. Maybe if there was asome sort of high gear overdrive you could really lay down some mileage at much lower RPM's.

I don't see hardly any fuel economy difference between my 500HO Scrambler and our '02 SP700.

The last big ride our group went on one guy had a new 800. 30 miles is all he could get on a tank of gas. He ran out twice and they wound up leaving it behind.

I just got back from a ride in Colorado and Utah. My buddy rides a 2005 500 H.O. We consistently got the same gas mileage on the whole trip. Right at 20 mpg. The mileage on my 800 has gotten better through time. I now have about 1500 miles on it.
