Default Winches revisited

If you need a switch, go to radioshack and get what dirtfarmer said a double pole double throw (dpdt) momentary switch. I mounted it on my pod and ran it direct to the battery. This is a picture of where i installed the switch :switch install

That location was the only place to put in the pod and its convenient if you plow.

This is how you wire the switch to reverse the polarity, scroll halfway down and you can see a little picture of a dpdt type switch :switch wiring Put jumper wires in an "X" fashion from the battery and connect the wires going to the winch to the two center prongs.

And oh yeah, while your there, buy some female spade connectors to attach to the switch.

Hope this helps

Default Winches revisited

Thanks guys, I got her all put back together today. It will pull more then the brakes will hold, I'm sure I'll get to try in out in the mud real soon. I ran power from the tailight circuit for my safty relay so there is no power to the winch when the key is off. I mounted the switch on top of the headlight pod above the power outlet and put a switch on the other side for the 3 headlight mod. I think it turned out pretty good. I think I've got about $70 into this winch (winch, fairlead, and switch) and a few hours time, not much more then a few good tow straps.

tpalm5, I wired mine with the feed (batt) to the center and winch to one side (+/+ & -/-) with jumpers crossed to the other side (+/- & -/+), I used 10 guage wire for the jumpers because it will never be under load going out and theres not much room in the pod for bigger wire. Either way should work fine though. The switch I got also had screw on terminals that I hope would stay on better then the spade connectors.

Pictures to follow when aprooved. Thanks again, Jeff

Jeff,

Is that the Champion or Chicago wench? Harbor freight has the latter on sale for $50 right now

BTW
You going to make and sell any homemade mounts?

Its the Chicago Electric Winch, I ordered it just after Christmas for $45 but didn't get it till last week (backordered). I got the Fairlead off ebay for $20 including ship.

The mount was pretty simple but I doubt I'll be making any more. I just made a cardboard template of the hole it fits in and used a piece of 1/4 to fit back there. It bolts to the 4 bolts that hold the front end on and the winch is mounted directly to it. Then I just bent 2 pieces to mount the fairlead to and welded them on to the bottom. I have the fairlead mounted as far back as posible (I don't plow) so I can use the brushguard to push people out. I should have takin some pics before I mounted it but the cammera batts where dead.

I can try and get better pics of it if you want some, Jeff

Yes , great , thanks. So the Champion and Chicago is the same. They have two part numbers in the ad, maybe ones for ATV application.

I heard its made at the same factory as the superwench and that brand mount would work, is thuis true?

Mine is Model 92860 from the book, Its more like the 91727 but either one should work. I would go for the 91727 because it's a 1.5 HP motor like mine is and the 90282 is .85 HP motor. Also the 91727 has longer Remote cables and 1' longer winch cable.

Good Luck, Jeff

Go to harborfreight.com and type in 92860 it'll show the one I got, I think its the same picture as the 91727.
