Spring question for sportsman...
#1
How hard is it to change a primary spring on a 4oo sportsamn . Iam replacing the belt right now so I figured I put in new spring for a little more take off response. I was told a white one would do the trick but i dont know about the labor. heelclicker .com makes it look easy as long as your doing the spring. Any help would be great...

Take the center bolt out then take the 6 bolts out of the primary take the spring out put the new spring in and reinstall the 6 bolts and the center bolt. Pretty easy to do while you got the cover off.

What the spring does is change your engaugment and your shift out. If you put a stiffer spring in it will take more rpm's to get your atv to move and a little longer to shift out. If you have the stock spring in it probably takes off right off idle put a stiffer spring in and it will take a few more hundred rpm's to get it to go. It's kinda like a stall converter in a drag car. I hear alot of people like the polaris white spring.

see right now my machine has stock spring. It takes some throttle for it to get moving off the start. A friend got on to ride and he said whats wrong with this is it in gear and the machine wasnt moving Iam talking 1-4 throttle i said give it some gas and it moved. All I really want is a better take off so that means is less pounds for spring . what is stock spring set at anyway?Oh by the way Iam talking about the primary front spring not the secondary..... Dennis kirk shows 7 colors...It shows at DK that stock polaris has a blue spring at 0lb-2/1/2 and 1-1/4@115lb that is the lowest spring on the chart. By going higher lbs means better take off. Thanks-Mark

By going to a higher # spring means your going to have to give it more throttle to take off. The stock spring should take off just above idle. Your belt might be wore out causing the higher engagment. I would measure your belt and see if it's still when in tolerance.

Hey thanks for the reply and today I put in a new dayco belt and I think Iam going leave it at that. The blue spring has the lowest rating and i see no reason to change, I havent test drove yet with new belt due to wife amtters but thanks again for the info atleast I learned something on this.
