I am looking at a 1995 polaris 400 4x4 for sale. It has 4400 miles on it, i am wondering if this is high mileage or average, how long do these motors usually run. It comes with a 4 foot plow and new tires. The body is good, they want $2000 for it. I am wondering if it is worth the price. Everything works but the speedometer, i am assuming it needs a $15 cable to fix it. How reliable is the belt drive? thanks I am also wondering is this a 2 or 4 stroke?

That would be a 2-stroke and I think it's too much. They are good quads, but a '95 is getting old and most people don't want the 2-strokes anymore (I love them!) Do a compression check on the motor, take it for a good ride (test the AWD system) and then pick it apart to get him to lower the price. If you're looking for a decent used 4x4 without spending a ton, these can be great quads. Be aware that they do require more maintenance than a new one would. Belts aren't a problem unless there's something seriously wrong.

400 exxplorer is a good machine i have a 95 as well.....you have to watch the outbaord bearing behind the brake disc...if it is not filled with grease frequently it will wear out very fast.....chain tension is also crucial...i live in northern minnesota i and that is a drit cheap price for a polaris of that vintage.....i love my 2 stroke but they are kind of a thing of the past....overall a nice bike....

The xplorer is a nice quad, there is more maintence because of chain drive to front axle and extra sprockets. My xplorer came in boxes because previous owner did deep mud, we had to assemble motor, put it back in frame, replace primary clutch, add clutch kit , replace cv joint boot in front axle. The important thing to check is dipstick for counter balancer, it doesn't hold much oil. I do some mud,not over engine. my clutch was bad from mud got in and wore hole in sheaves.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Hi,I have a 95 Explorer too,I love it and it is so far very dependable.
I road a Raptor and a Banchee over the holidays and couldnt wait to get back on my Polaris!
Hey BIGCHEVROLET,Ive had problems with that chain adjustment thing,I got the manual and still couldnt get it like I wanted.
Whats the trick to keeping the tension while tighting the axle nut?
From my experience its a good deal, mine was $1500.00 and it was rolled,I spent a bit on repairs too and you get a plow!Wish I had one of those, they were about $350.00 at Fleet Farm lol.
Good luck with your ATV search,
Russell

On my 96 xplorer you adjust tension by sticking punch through hole in sprocket into outside edge of axle housing, there is opening on housing to hold punch tip. With axle hold down bolts loose, when you roll machine back and forth it moves adjustment. Tighten bolts, remove punch. These have to be done in a specific order or one adjustment will throw off the next adjustment. My machine has marks on housing because previous owner tried adjusting it by beating on housing with hammer and chisel.
