2000 Sportsman 500 shift box leaking

Hello,
I just bought my first ATV...so I'm not real familiar with all the mechanicals of it yet. It's been working great but I just noticed the 'shift box' (attached to the Forward, Reverse, Neutral Shift Arm - would this be called the transmission?) is leaking at the 'pistons' that push in and out when you move the shift lever.
Few Questions:
1. How do I re-fill this (I've removed all 4 bolts on top but can't seem to find an area to fill it)
2. Do I re-fill with Transmission fluid?
3. How do I stop the leaks (they are pretty slow...now)
It almost appears like there used to be some type of "C" clamp on the 'pistons' that has broken off...the pistons have a groove in them to accept some type of seal...I'm guessing here.
Please Help!
