I am in the process of fixing my starter on a 1995 Polaris Explorer 400, I removed the pull start and the 2 screws from the starter, moved to the other side ,removed the drive belt and secondary clutch, now, my manual says I need a special puller #2870506 to get the drive pully off, can I not use a ordinary puller? Whats so special about this puller? Can I unthread the bolt half way and use the puller against the head of the bolt and pop it off? TIA.

The problem with a jaw type puller is that a lot of pulling force is out from the shaft and can crack the clutch. The clutch pullers use a larger threaded bolt that tapers down to push against the crankshaft it. The larger thread engages the clutch itself where is it beefed up so no damage will be done. Click on this link to see photos of another guys website that shows alot of clutch tools, some home made others bought.

Worked like a darn! Went and bought a 3/4x6 fine thread bolt, and found some bronze stock I had kick'n around, cut it to 4" slid it in ,tightened the bolt up and one smack with the hammer and off she popped!
now just got to figure out whether to rebuild the starter or buy a new one??? I see on Ebay there is lots of stuff out there, any other good places to purchase parts (other than the dealer)?
