Beef up my trailer
#1
I have decided I need to beef up my trailer because when I transport 2 quads on rough bush roads the tires hit the top of the fender. I thought about new shocks but the angle my present shocks sits are almost horizontal. I have 5 leaf springs. I'm not sure if a spring would help because of the angle the shocks sit. It is a homemade trailer by the way. BL

Are you using a differential type axle from a vehicle? If so your going to need to ad an air bag assist system or helper type spring. Maybe add a leafs or all new leaf springs. I had made a trailer with a vehicle axle. It ended up doing the same plus the diff started leaking and going bad. Ended up putting a real trailer axle under it springs, tires, and all.

Why not just make longer shackels for the rear mounting of the springs?? This will give you more ride hight and is super cheap and easy to do. Shocks don't carry any weight, they just cushon axle travel. Just my 2 cents.

Yes Fishslab, it is a vehicle axle from my buddys wrecked car. I knew I was going to have to do something else. Hotdogmb, I was thinking of different springs or adding another. The shackles is an interesting idea. You must ride through rough roads and swamps like me as I see you are Canadian too. BL

I converted a 1972 chevy 1/2 into a utility trailer. It also rubs the tires against the fender I have springs off a 3/4 ton chevy and someday plan on doing the swap out. I agree, changing the shocks won't help. I like the shackle idea Will give that some consideration.
