"Green Spring"
#21
400Bossman has hit the nail SQUARE on the head and set it deep with a single blow. I'm glad somebody understands this! What the green spring is doing is getting the 2 strokes up to their narrow power band quicker, and avoiding the clutches engaging when power is too low. This also reduces belt slippage.
When in the woods, my 589's seemed to find a real good bite, and was wheelying all over the place. One MUST realize this is in low range from a dead stop, but it was a LOT of fun!

With the belt engaging at the "optimum HP range" does that mean more power at the lower end and subsequently lower power at the higher end?
Top end speed is not my priority, I would like a little more low end on my Xplorer.

What they are doing is using a spring with a higher initial rate, and same/similar full shift weight so it does not affect the upper RPM's much at all.
A complete kit will generally have a multi angle/progressive cut helix for the secondary, and a set of bushed/balanced weights along with the primary spring, and quite often, a secondary spring.

I got the spring in and it is great on the 400 SC just like Bill and everyone on here that has tried it said it would be. The only problem I have is with the back tires spinning like crazy this thing reminds me of an over wieght Banshee It does get the power in the power band it is great for the SC also. So for a cheap power up use the Green Spring

I have been waiting for a reply from someone with a green spring who can tell me if you lose and low end power or do you lose top end speed?? I am more worried about the top end speed. And there has to be some drawback to the green spring??? what are the downfaults of it??

Ceet,
Glad to here you acheived some good results with your Green spring to.I sure like mine alot.I was so disappointed in the performance of the EPI complete clutch kit in my 99 Sportsman, that this is really a dream come true, especially for 29 dollars.I know im dealing with a 2 stroke vs a 4 stoke [ my 99 Sportsman] but im now curious if a complete kit would do even MORE for my Xplorer?===Bill

Bill,
You may or may not see a difference between the
green spring and a complete clutch kit. It really
depends on your riding style. What everyone needs
to realize is that kits can be developed for different riding styles. One kit may give you enough low end to pull out stumps but not have any
top end, another may give you top end but doggy out of the hole. I currently have a hpd kit in my
2000 explorer and it improved my low end. Top end
is the same.I compare any changes I make against a
friends 99 explorer.I use this as my baseline because stock we performed identical. This weekend
we will run them from a dead stop and I'll be able
see if the kit made it quicker. So far I'm pleased
with the performance,it's a little snappier and I
can still crawl over rocks easily.Like I said before I'm by no means an expert but I'll try to
pass on what I've learned over the years. 8~)

I installed a AAEN clutch kit on my '00 scrambler 500 4x4. The kit came with 55g wieghts and a red spring. Also put a roller kit in the secondary with the stock silver spring. The engagement was to high and it had to much rpm on top end . I took KEVINM'S advise and put AAEN'S green spring and 53g weights in the primary with a blue secondary spring at 2/2 setting. The motor seemed to be getting loaded down to much. So I grabbed a digital scale from work and took 2grams of the weights so they are 51grams now . This setup works really good . The machine has excellent low end and midrange and engagement is'nt as high. Top end dos'nt feel to bad, have'nt run it against anyone yet. Also the weights were not matched very good couple were 1g off right from AAEN.

On The SC it really seems the top end is better I plan on running it against the 400EX this week sometime to try and get a better estimate of the real changes. I will say this it will jump the 4 stroke in the whole if I can get the tires to bite
And if it does jump it it will be about the only thing that can even the raptor has troubles with getting hole shot on the 400EX.

In replying to all the comments on just a spring compared to a full clutch kit...is it not logical that the whole kit would be much better?
I know that the improvements may not all be noticable by "the seat of your pants" or stopwatch times... but wouldn't the weights, springs and especially a new multi-angle helix get more power where you need it and also use it better? I am trying to think logically in that you get what you pay for.
Like I said before, I am not the best mechanic or clutch expert, but I saw a much more noticable difference with an EPI kit than a kit with only weights and springs...
