"Green Spring"
#31
Bosty22,
I just installed the green spring in my 00 xplorer 400 and all my change was in the bottom end. It took about three mph off the top. I can live with that.
I'm thinking the same thing Bill is. If I got this much improvement from just the spring what would the whole kit feel like.
Xplor,
What color spring came with the kit that you installed on your explorer? I think that I read you saying that you gained just a little top end also. With the hole kit did you notice much differance in the engagement rpm's? Thats the biggest differance I see with just the spring change, besides the extra take off that is.

Xplor, if you tune your clutches right you will definitely feel a seat-of-the-pants difference and would notice a difference on a stopwatch. Think of a clutch kit as being like a stall converter and shift kit added to an automatic transmission car. The front spring and weights determine how high the motor revs before the belt fully engages allowing you to tune for better holeshots when taking off. A good rear clutch setup will allow for quicker upshifting when accelerating and quicker downshifting when hillclimbing.
I currently have a pile of weights, springs and a couple of helixes I have tried, but now I think I have found the best setup for my 500. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. My brother uses a completely different front clutch setup on his 400. Pipes, carbs, airbox mods, etc. will all play a factor in what your clutch setup needs to be.

I put the green spring in my SC500 today - got it from the dealer $19.75.. The initial take-off is at a higher RPM - like a stall converter for a car. The SC pulls great wheelies and in 4WD - grabs quick. Top end is about the same but out of the hole it takes my 400EX. I'm going to try some other springs to lower the stall. When using reverse I have to use the overide button to get going, but going along you can still make the machine crawl to a start. All and all a good improvment for the price!!! Does anyone know how the 2 1/2 and 1 1/4 load numbers relate to take-off RPM with the springs???
