Default reverse gear silent chain change 98 sp 500

Have any of you guys ever changed the silent chain that runs reverse gear in a older model (1998) sportsman 500? I have a buddy whose machine is popping in reverse gear like the chain is slipping. We have adjusted the shift linkages to no avail. The machine pulls strong in high and low gear.
We are going to tear into it and see what happens. We wanted to get any pointers that you guys could offer!

Thanks in advance.

I've done this, do you have a service manual? it pretty well spells it out step by step. I would imagine the chain has stretched, need to replace it pretty quick or it could ruin the gears or wad up and break the case of the trans. The one I did cost $40. for the chain and $45 for the three seals, took me 6 or7 hours to r and r it.

yup, im doing that exact thing right now.

i just yanked my tranny last nite and split the cases. the reverse silent chain was so stretched out, it was damn near falling off the gears. i plan on replacing the seals and both chains inside.

its harder and more time consuming to get the damn tranny out, than it is to take it apart and diagnose the problem.

make sure and screw the adjustment that hits the side of frame in all the way cause it is a tight fit, also be sure and use the rigt sealer between the cases, regular silicone is to thick . Good luck
