Still problems...

Ok, my battery still wont hold a charge, even after slow charging it for a long time. And the tach on my pod always says 0rpm. Everything else works though - AWD, odometer, speedometer. Any suggestions? I called the dealer, my quad is not under the recall about the control modules. It is under one for the wrong main jet though, I should have that looked at.

Hey tyler,
If I were a bettin' man, I'd wager a pay check on a bad control module. I realize that your quad is not covered under warranty but perhaps you should have the part replaced at the shop then if the problem disappears, raise a HUGE stink with Polaris for coverage. You need to get it fixed anyhow so ya got nothin' to lose !!

Yeah, I'm thinking that (gasp) I may have to bring it to the dealer to have them look at it. Haven't had to do that with any of my polaris's yet, but this looks like something electrical or computer related, and we can't usaully do too much about that.

Hello tyler711. The first thing I would do is measure the battery voltage with a voltmeter while the quad is runing. A fully charged battery should read about 12.5-13 volts after removing from the charger and the quad not running. Measure the battery voltage before you start the quad. The battery voltage should increase after you start the quad. If it isn't measuring above 14 volts after charging for a few minutes. It probably isn't charging. If it is measuring above 14 volts while the quad is running, the quad it is charging and the problem may be a bad battery.
I hope this helps you

I didnt use a voltmeter, but I did use the diag mode in the quad. It's about 12.5 when not running, around 13 when idling, and up to 14.9 at higher RPM's. Think a bad battery would cause that tachometer problem? Maybe I'll try switching one of the batteries from the Xplorers. It would be nice if it was just a bad battery.

When you say it is reading 13 volts when idling.. Is that after a few minutes of running or was it right after you started the engine. After you start the engine, the charging circuit is charging the battery and it will take a few minutes of idling to get it up to voltage. I checked my quad, at idle it was 13.5 volts and 14.5 volts when I gave it gas. It sounds like your charging circuit is working. Now the next step is to stop the quad, disconnect one lead of the battery and measure the current with the ameter portion of the Volt-ohm-meter. The current should probably measure less than say 20mA. Any more and it will drain your battery in a time defined by:
Time = (Amp hour capacity of the battery) / current
My batteryu is a 14 AH capacity so at 0.02 A (20mA) it would discharge in:
14 AmpHours/0.02 A = 700 hours or 30 days.
Now if the current draw is quite low, like above, then you probably have a bad battery. If the current draw is much higher, then something in the electrical system is draining your battery and you need to find out what it is by disconnecting things untill the current draw drops.
I hope this helps you

Thanks bryce. Next time we stop home I'll grab my voltmeter. Another thing I noticed is that the tach works when the starter is running. So when I start the machine, after the startup screen (all segments black) the tach is on its way back to zero, where it remains no matter how much revving or speed. I don't know if the sensor is bad, or if a bad battery is making problems pop up all over the place.

I have a schematic, but the service manual is also in town, or else I would've looked at it. I'm gonna need to make a list of what I need to pick up when I stop back there tomorrow...
