Shifting issues on the SP 500
#1
I bought a used 2000 sportsman with 2200 miles on it and it occasionally gives me issues shifting between High/ Low/Reverse, no real pattern with the issue. It does seam to be more frequent on a steep incline. I read the archives and others had this issue with theirs when they were new. The previous owner warned me it would occasionly be a bugger shifting.
Where should I start?
Clean and Lube
Adjust tie rods
Just deal with it
Other suggestions?
Thanks

I replaced the fluid in the shifter "case" it was over filled from the dealer (not sure if this was the issue or not). Also I had to adjust the tie rod ends about a million times and haven't done so in better than a year. It seems to be a pretty finicky adjustment.

I notice if I do lots of ridding in low, that after it get good and hot I almost have to let the machine cool before changing gears. I have also found that it is sticking in low and not really moving. I have not check my gear shifter fluid, but I did notice a bit of leakage a while back from that area.

Good input so far Thanks!!!
Breezer, I did check out my tie rods today, I think I will mess with it more when its warmed up on the trail.
BikKat, Looking back it has been when the machine is warmed up and ran hard for a while.
Keep sending your ideas
Thanks
