Default 1999 400 sport tranny question

My brother bought a 1999 400 sport for his son. When he takes off it clicks like the chain is slipping. We put a new chain and 2 new sprockets on it and he is getting the same thing. I think the noise is coming from the tranny but not sure. I think it might be the silent chain in the tranny but have never had any problems with my scrambler 400 doing this. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem. When he gets on the gas it makes the clicking noise and also when you land from getting air bourne. I plan on removing the tranny for him and checking to see if the chain and sprockets are worn in the tranny.

My 96 sport had the same thing when my brother owned it. It did end up being the silent chain. Not real sure about the transmissions though I have yet to tear one apart so I dont know how hard it is.

Default 1999 400 sport tranny question

I have had the tranny out on my scrambler and tore it completely apart because I broke my drive chain and busted a hole in my case. Not to hard, just time consuming because you have to remove about every thing but the motor. Both clutches have to come off. That is the biggest pain. Thanks for your help. I knew someone out there has had this problem before.

Most likely it is the chain inside the trans.

The good news is the parts are not too expensive and the trans is fairly simple to work on once you get it out of the frame.

When you get it back togather fill the trans with Castrol Syntec 5w50 and you will not have to replace the chain again.

Thanks for all the info. I just have to find the polaris parts dealer in North Carolina again. They have the best price on polaris parts.

My bike was doing the same thing. I put a new chain in the tranny and it fixed it. Its pretty easy to do.

Wo WO WO WO, Now if you are hereing a clicking sound from the back, and it sounds like the chain or the tranny and you have replaced the chain, i would inspect alittle more. NOw om not saying its not your tranny but befor you go buyng the parts, ARE YOU SURE ITS NOT THE REAR BEARINGS. My scrambler did the exact same thing. I thought it was the same thing as you, then i listened and it sounded more like the bearing. Grease your rear hub first and see if you still here it. The bearings could be your prob.
