Default Help with 1996 scrambler 400

hey guys need some help-
riding my wheeler a lot last couple months and all of the sudden the motor started to bog up hills and not run right. well i started to look at the situation and changed my spark plug and it ran good...well i drove it quite a bit after that with no problems and it started running funny again....i would start it up..pull start of course (polaris) and it would idle fine but when i would push the throttle in and get into high rpms it would bog down, bog up, bog down, bog up...after looking at it for a while i looked at the boot coming off the carb to the reeds and it was weathered pretty bad..had some cracks in it...i was told if it sucks air it oculd do this....so got a new one put it on and it ran better but is still bogging up and down at high rpm's...i have tried a bunch of stuff and wondering if anyone knows or could point me in the right direction

thanks

Have you checked any of your clutch parts? Also did you change the plug when you replaced the intake boot? Mine is really cracked too but it doesn't affect anything(it's really thick rubber) mostly cosmetic.

Yes check your spark plug even if it's new it can still be bad. Next make sure the air filter is clean. a dirty filter can cause a bog real bad especially on 2 strokes. Clutch engagement can also cause a bog by engaging to fast. If the primary spring is still the original it can get weak and cause this over time. Just a few ideas.

Oh yea last but not least in these day of gas crunches cheap waterdowned gas will kill you. Be careful where you buy gas from.

thanks guys-
ya i was just working on it and when i went to the local polaris company i did buy about 5 plugs....all of which the wheeler does the same thing....i will look at the clutch to see how it looks but would that cause it to stop getting at its highest rpm and staying there? i have also been told it could be the coil, cdi box, and the stater...since you guys prolly know more are those realistic ideas or something i shouldn't listen to? thanks for your time

I'd definatley check the clutching if you haven't done anything to it since you've had it. Yes it will cause this. You could have a weak secondary spring. The secondary buttons could be gone and nothing for the the helix to ride on. Other things too.

so the clutching would affect it just idling like that....that is interesting and I am gonna try it...if it isn't that what else do you think it could be?

I thought you said it idled fine?? Only doing it uphills. And on and off the throttle. It could be your carb needing to be cleaned(trash in the carb or fuel filter) as well but with it being a 96 model with no clutch maintenance in 9 years I'm sure it may need to be looked at as a source of problems.

Sounds to me like you have a blocked jet in your carb... sounds like its starving for fuel
