Default 97 Sportsman Not Good

Here's the problem, one of the wiring cables rubbed against the bottom of the carb float bowl and rubbed a hole in it.

I took the carb loose and flipped it over and patched the hole with some JB weld. After allowing it to dry overnight, I reinstalled everything, took it for a spin, and it won't run over about 10 mph idles fine, sometimes if you don't push to hard you can slowly get it up to 30-35 mph.

Came back removed the carb again inspected the main jet, no problems there, I just couldn't see anythng wrong. Reinstalled everything, and tried it again, same result, tried tapping on the carb with the machine running, no help.

Went out on the road and gave it full throttle, it just boggs and chuggs along, I reached down and turned the gas off, and right before it ran out of gas, it took off for a second. I turned the gas back on and restarted it, gave it full throttle, same problem, turned the gas off and as soon as it took off I turned the gas back on, and then just turned the gas petcock on an off as fast as I could, the quad took off and ran like a champ until I stopped turning the gas on and off, then it bogged out and begin running like crap again.

It has had a carb kit put in in the last 8 months, and I made sure the airbox is sealed good and all the vent lines are clear, I just don't know where else to look. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
G.D.

Pull your plug to verify but sounds like it is running rich after the way you describe shutting the gas off and it runs fine for that few seconds.

Double check everything you dissassembled, is the choke stuck on? Is it possible where you repaired the bowl it has the float hung up?

I would check the choke operation. Then, if that is O.K. I would pull the carb and remove the float bowl. If you did not have it off for the repair I am wondering if some of J.B. Weld got inside of the bowl and on the float.

Good luck.

That sounds very possible. Some of the JB could have founds it's way inside the bowl and it is messing with the float. It could be holding the float up and not allowing enough fuel into the bowl.

I appreciate the suggestions guys. I have already had the bowl off to check the main jet, and I inspected the floats at that time. Besides if the floats were stuck closed why would it help to turn off the fuel and let it almost run out of gas?

Thanks anyway,
G.D.
