Hey guys I have a 2000 sportsman 500, I put a k&n air filter, a stage 1 k&n dyno jet kit, a epi sport/utillity clutch kit. and gutted my stock muffler. all the upgrades helped, but I was hopping for more hole shot. I can hardly lift the front wheels off the ground when it is in high gear, from a dead stop, in low gear it will lift straight up.any thoughts anyone? am i expecting to much.Thanks for any help. OK here are my thoughts. I've owned 500 Sportsman’s from 98 to 01 and both machines will lift the front wheels slightly in low range from a standing start on pavement. The Sportsman was NOT designed to do wheelies but with some Mod’s I'm sure you will accomplish this task. One thing that comes to mind is engine flow through. What I mean is you need to flow more air/fuel through the engine at the correct ratio, typically 14:0 to 1. As you have mentioned you have opened the exhaust, installed a dynojet, K&N filter and clutch kit. One thing that is missing from you list of mods is AIR BOX. Polaris restricts the air box inlet which limits power so if you change the inlet tube or remove the airbox lid and REJET (very important) for the full range of the throttle you should be able to gain more power.
Consider though! Increasing power will increase the wear and tear on your clutches/belt because for any change in action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you can live with the consequences then go for it and have fun.</FONT>

I believe yours is the none HO version which is the same as my old 98 Sportsman. If this is true then your airbox is not the same as the HO model but still a restricted air inlet tube. If you want to try it remove the airbox lid and take it for a ride. You will find that it will run extremely poorly because the air fuel mixture is way to lean which is a result of the air restriction being removed.
If you now rejet the carb by increasing the jet sizes you will see much improved performance.
Of course there are consequences to this, you cannot run in deep water and the extra power will put additional strain on all drive components.</FONT>

traildog you are correct mine is the year before the H.O. Have you ever heard of any one plumming a secondary out let tube out of the airbox, I don,t really like the thoughts of running it with no airbox lid. How much of a warning will the motor let you have before any major damage, when your running it to lean. I will probbaly have to take some plug readings correct. Darren

There is no reason an additional air intake tube can't be added, this will reduce the restriction and increase air flow. There was a fellow on this site several years ago modified his Sportsman and had pics of him doing wheelies down the street where he lived but unfortunately I cannot remember his name.
As for running too lean for extended periods of time is a difficult one to answer. It all comes down to EGTs, the leaner it is the hotter it becomes. If it were me I would increase the main jet size 4 sizes, lift the needle 2 notches and open the pilot 1/2 a turn then go from there. Installing an EGT gauge will make life a lot easier as you can monitor the temperatures in a very short time and make the necessary adjustments.</FONT>
