Polaris obviously does not test <u>production</u> machines. We have seen many models come out with problems (most not this serious) that could have been avoided completely with proper testing.

The 500 EFI may be a new machine, but Polaris is not new to EFI and certainly not new to ATV design. They can do better.

Text I agree!! These hardcore Polaris people are Blind!!! My 2006 Polaris has been in the dealer for a month!!! Buy a new car or a Truck and leave it in the shop for a month ???? Good thing I have a Honda for Backup!!!! My last polaris !!!

Sorry Stampers. But anyone who thinks that all things coming out of a factory will all be 100% is living in a dream world. There isn't any manufacturer in the world that achieves this. Just browsing through the other manufacturers forums confirms this quite clearly.

I believe Polaris knew of this problem before shipping the quads to the dealers. I also believe it was a business decision to ship them prior to fixing the problem. Here are the reasons I say this.
Assuming Polaris produces (a guess) 100 units per day, that would mean they would have to store the sum of 100 units per day somewhere temporarily until the fix was in.
Once the fix has been decided upon then a company must be contracted to manufacture these pieces (Polaris farms out most of the parts) and a price agreed upon. In big business this takes time, considerable time. I the mean time we are still producing 100 units per day and storing them, somewhere.
Now the fix has been manufactured and supplied Polaris and Polaris must now hire workers to install them on all the quads in storage = time and cost.
Once upgraded they now have to ship thousands of quads all over the world in a short space of time. I can see resources being a problem here.
Also if the production line is stopped until the fix is ready what happens to all the workers?
As I said I believe this was a business decision, it is cheaper to continue to produce the quads, ship them to the dealers, then pay the dealers to install the fix once it is ready.
Certainly not the best for the customer but this is business trying to keep costs down and profits up.
Just my thoughts.

Come on Traildog. No manufacturer purposely ships broken product out the door. Manufacturers know that it is much more expensive to fix it out in the field than at the plant. The typical number is that it is 10 times more expensive to fix it after it moves from the plant. This is just basic business sense. Your logic holds no water. What makes more sense is that either someone forgot to put the resistor in during asembly or the module manufactuer shipped the wrong module. Then at some point in time after, QC caught the problem and issued a repair bulletin to the dealers. Seems to me we just have a few people trying to find a consiracy where none exists.

We have no way of knowing whether or not Polaris knew about the problem before they shipped, but I understand what you're trying to say. I don't disagree that Polaris would probably continuing shipping units to dealers, even if they knew about the problem. Your reasons make sense. And from what I hear, Polaris already has a bunch of other units (all models) waiting to ship but that they don't have enough trucks available to get them all out.

However, in this case I don't think Polaris knew about the problem. Why? If they did, they would probably continue shipping them until a fix was a available on the line but they would tell dealers not to sell them until the fix is installed. It would make more sense, cost less, and hold a better reputation for Polaris if they stopped the sales until the fix was installed instead of continuing to sell them. I've yet to hear about a damaged 500 EFI due to overheating... However, do you think that's a risk Polaris would be willing to take? It's a lot of money in parts and labor fixing motors!

I think everyone here is upset their quad was broke, but look at the big picture. Look how much this hurts Polaris! It hurts their reputation, sales, and most of all their pocket book! I'm not saying to feel sorry for them... I don't. I'm just saying that you need to realize it is most definitely in Polaris's best interest to fix the problems before they start, or as soon as possible anyway. They are not out to take advantage of all their customers like you all think! Their customers is what puts food on their tables at night.

Stampers:

I too would be frustrated if my quad had been at the dealer for a month when it was brand new. However, this a a fix that a dealer can install in the parking lot on your trailer without even unloading. It takes 15 minutes. Why do they need it for a month? Many dealers get stacked up on a service work. It's not uncommon at all to be backed up 2-3 weeks before a service department can even look at your machine in this industry regardless of manufacture. However, warrenty work on a brand new machine...especially if it takes 15 minutes...that should be priority. However, I don't know your whole story. It may be in for something more than that, and or there may be issues I'm unaware of.

very interresting perspectives.


i hate to add fuel to the fire BUT i am having more problems. i found shifting out of LOW very difficult. i thought maybe the idle was too high. not the case.

now when i come to a brisk stop my ATV stalls almost every time. i called my Dealer today. they said to bring it over Tues for them to look into some clutching issues that they think are the cause of both problems.

maybe some of you guys don't mind making many trips to your Dealer's service dept, but i sure have better things to do with my time. this is interrupting my work schedule and quite an INCONVENIENCE!

Yes.. very different perspectives.. No dealer will ever touch my toys because I know they will never do as good a job as I will. My quads have never seen the dealer since I bought them and they never will. The only reason I ever take anything (cars included) is for recalls that are mandatory. Prior to buying anything, I will know anything that may be problematic with the machine. It seems to me, that people that know little about mechanical/electrical things should never buy first year products. The most basic reason is that not only does the customer know nothing about it, but the dealer doesn't either. Its just a disaster waiting to happen.

Make sure and have your dealer make a note to Polaris that your machine has been stalling upon stopping. If yours is the only one having this problem, it's an isolated incident....but if multiple dealers/vin #'s report the same problem, Polaris will realize it's widespread and look into it deeper. I had heard of this before but for whatever reason it always stopped with the overheating fix. Maybe that was just coincidence.

I bought my 500efi on December 2nd. I had the dealer check to see if I needed the resistor fix and he said the fan cycled three or 4 time and was working right. I took it home and warmed it up and it displayed hot on the speedo. The shifter was very hard to shift from all gear positions, so I called the dealer and he said that he ordered the fix and it will be in on Tuesday and to bring it in. I brought it in and let them know about the hard shifting and the fix and they called on Wednesday and said it was done and to pick it up. They said that they did a clutch alignment and did the resistor fix. Took it home and everything worked properly, shifted very easy and no hot display on speedo. So far I am very happy with it and have no regrets. It is an inconveince taking it back, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Also I haven't had any problems with it not idling right or stalling when coming to stop.
