I know the 05's were 2 inches wider than the 04's. But I thought the 05's were 48 and the 04's 46?

Specs on the 05 800 width is 48 in. I do not know where the 46 in spec came from but I actually measured mine and it appears to be 48 like the spec. I also measured an 06 later today and it is the same. The terminology regarding "heat treated" plastic was used by the tech at the dealer. Obviously plastic cannot be tempered like metal but molding heat resistant polymers and/or coatings are possible just like the plastic intake manifolds widely used on cars today. I don't know whether its true or not but it seems that with the corporate mentality of Polaris and faced with a problem like this, admitting a fault in a component is unlikely if untrue. Really I don't care if it's true or not as long as they remedy it permanently for all of us and we get the appropriate service under the warranty but it is good for all of us to compare dealer stories when we know they have been given info by the manufacturer at the same time and place. Keep postin' it helps!

I got the width of 46 inches on a 2005 from polaris' web site. I am not saying it is right, but it does say that.

Propolaris,

Thanks for looking and getting back. I am assuming that you removed the right side panel and looked at the area of the rear cab/fender where the shift rod, exhaust and shield all are close at the point the shift rod disapppears behind the fender which is the trouble spot. If that's where you looked, great. If not, you might check it again?? Also how many hours/mi on yours??? And in what kind of temp and riding conditions?? FMI

You are going to love the 800. Except for the probs I 've posted with my 05 which are relatively minor the thing is truly amazing. You will literally go up places in two wheel drive that you would not think possible which is a tribute to the tire selection and drive train by Polaris. It has some idiosynchrocies that take getting used to (a little less gas mileage, the ebs noises, width, weight, etc) but the overall package is pretty good for a stock "utility" quad. I ride from @5000-9000 ft. and the EFI has performed well. Let me know after you get it how it performs.

The stock PXT's are pretty good AT tires. Good enough to get through most anything, and smooth riding. But obviously not a true mudder.
