Default Scrambler Tranny Leaking Oil

My '02 Scrambler 4x4 is leaking quite a bit of oil when it sits out of the lower rear seam on the trans case where they join together. I think the kid that sold it might have hit a rock or something. Probably why he sold it. I keep it full before every ride. Do you think it is worth tearing into this winter to fix, it looks like a major? Could i drain the oil, brakeclean the seam and blue goo it? I do all or my own work, but splitting the trans case in half is a little intimidating.

Its not too bad........I've done it about 10 times or so. You probably have a bad seal, gasket, or a crack in the tranny. All of which are common. I'd get it done now. If you have a clutch puller......I'd go at it. If you need to know how to do it say.....otherwise, get to tearing apart. If you don't have a good memory of how to put back together......use a camera.

I just had the same problem with my "00 scrambler 400. It was the gasket or lack of. It is pretty straight forward to remove. I didn't use the puller, I just pulled back the back belt cover. Its been a few months now with no problems.

The trannys dont have gaskets they call for useing silicon gasket (formagasket). And it is a rather simple job.Get you a clutch puller and a service manual.

I thought it was a given that you change the chain out when you split the cases

That is why I take the clutch off too(on a non concentric model anyway).....so I can check the swing arm bolts and bushings......and I change the chain and sprockets out usually too....and possibly the brake pads........

Just pull the case and inspect it for cracks. If it is ok then replace the silent chain and seals and put a good bead of silicone gasket sealer on it and you are good to go. I broke a drive chain and knocked a hole in my tranny. I had it out, rewelded and back in over a weekend. Not hard. I have pics in my profile of the patch work I did. Worked out great and saved me a bunch of money.
