Some 2 strokes dont use them. Another thing that helps bottom end power is a longer head pipe on your expansion chamber. Im not sure how your pipe is mounted but another inch of head pipe length would help. As for polishing I did my first engine by hand, starting with 220 grit paper and ending up with 600 grit a few days later. Now I put the piston and head in a lathe and polish it when its moving. That low end pipe wouldnt hurt either. Also jetting is really critical to get maximum grunt too. Ever messed with the air screw and seen if it affects low end?

I am going to be gone for the rest of the day but will try and check back here tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply mywifesquad. I think for now I'll shy away from polishing. Just intimidated is all. Stock exhaust is very restrictive, but oddly not very quiet. I can tell it's holding the engine back. I haven't touched the carb yet, but it won't be long. I just read some stuff about running lean. I'm going to check for that first, and if everythings cool I am going to research on jetting. I've never done it, so I have no idea what to do. I read that the old Cyclones ran a 38mm carb as opposed to the 30mm carb mine has. I think the 400s use a 38mm carb, I could swap up to that, but I'm betting it will be just to much for my engine to take unless I port it. Not quite ready for all that yet. So, maybe some jetting if I can get more information on jetting and running lean. With my stock exhaust, I won't be able to go up much, but then again I don't think I'll have to for the results I'm looking for. . .

Xplorer4002stroke-I have a 2001 250 xplorer. But it would be very hard pressed to see 50mph.(down hill with a tailwind) I've ridden a 2000 400 xplorer some. I never pegged it in high range, but I know it was quick. Hard to say how fast, because I backed off of it. I didn't feel safe on it going any faster than 50

Going to a bigger carb will only hurt low end. And you dont want to go any smaller either. i would just try adjusting the air screw and see if it changes anything. its amazing what 1/4 turn can do some times. Do you know where your air screw is?

Thanks mywifesquad for the info. Please trust me that anything and everything you can tell me helps. I won't be able to get my xplorer until the weekend (its at my father-in-laws) but I plan on doing some snow plowing. I'll tweak it then. I want to check my plug, maybe put a new one in it and look for lean burn. I honestly think its running rich, but I don't know yet. My bike's a 2001, bought it used and I think it hasn't been ridden very much at all. The tires have almost 100% tread, but the rubber definetly doesn't look new. Just a tune up, more or less, and it should be good to go. Thanks for the tip on carbs as well. Will jetting up hurt bottom end?

I think you should run the Hoover drive belt to the 250's drive pulley to SUPERcharge it, not turbocharge it.
