your right it is probably turned or jambed into the inner hillard race!!!!
do not try to slide hammer it out you will most likely damade something
take the housing apart and if you have to buy a new inner race for that side then thats what you will need to do but trying to pound it apart with the diff assembled is asking for trouble!!!!!

broke a front axle BAD UPDATED!!!
Take the diff out of quad, pull diff apart, take that chunk of steel that is splined(input for diff to a welder person, weld an eye bolt or something to the busted shaft, put the welded on part in a big As$ vice and pull out the axle stub. put it back together--no bad seals 4-5 hrs work. JUST DO IT

TJ700 I feel your pain. I know your looking for a way to fix this at home without tearing your machine all apart. I know from experience that even with complete axles they are a bear to get out. So drilling seems out of the question since the axle spline is hardend. Maybe someone could TIG weld an eye bolt on the axle stub without cooking the diff seal, an experienced welder can tell you. Good luck, you'll get it.
Sorry Bigdog, it don't work that way up front at least not on the front diffs with the central Hillard. I have my front axles out right now and there's no pass through, just solid steel.
