The older ones used to have a bad rep. Like all atv's they will have problems at one point. You cant find a better ride than the Sportsmans. Very plush. Every one will have a different pros and cons. The 500 HO may the best motor Polaris has other than the smaller cc atv's. It has plenty of power for whatever task. The ride is plush and you can adjust it. I think the smaller cc atv's hold up better drivetrain wise because they do not have as much torque. The 500HO is a great balance between the big bore and single cylinders.

ive had 4 polaris wheelers and havent had any trouble w/ them. just your normal wear things like brake pads. the 500 is one of the most bullet proof ones out there a good choice, and you cant beat the ride of it

I own 2 polaris quads and thats what most of us ride around here. There are a few yfz's and a 416EX. I'm gonna have to say that as long as you do the proper maintenance on it, it won't let you down, and if it does, polaris will stand behind it witha warranty of some sort. the pros - reputation for the sportmans is unbleiveable, the scramblers are also one of a kind. comfortable on the trails and one hell of a work horse. the cons - weight (if you're lookin for a race quad of any sort, polaris isnt exactly gonna have very many options other than the pred and outlaw), they don't hold their value very well if you want to resale, but that doesnt bother me much bc i'll probably never get rid of mine anyway.

The front storage box will leak from the bottom in high water, but is pretty much sealed on from the top.

well gas mileage varies quite a bit, depending on how ya ride it. but my buddy's dad used to have a 700 sportsman that seemed like it had a bottom less tank.

Duct tape the radiator lid and the shock tower access and that will help your water problem.

the 500 EFI's get fantastic millage, over 100 miles a tank

the twins liek the 700 and 800 though suffer. if you ride 800's gently after there totaly broken in, you can expect about 60 to 70 miles to the tank
