Which Scram, 400 or 500
#1
Have decided to get a scrambler but don't know which one to get. I have ridden the 400 and it ran like a bat out of hell. But what about the 4 stroke 500? Is it any faster or more reliable then the 2 stroke. I had and sold a 2000 400EX so I am used to having the torque of a 4 stroke but have always craved the speed of a 2 stroke. Any comments, good or bad, would be cool.

If you're going to modify the quad and don't mind getting your hands dirty, get the 400. If you just want to change oil and add fuel, get the 500. Just don't cry to us if the 400's fly by you on the trail.
A pipe and clutch kit in the 400 will really wake up the quad and make it truly fly... BTW, the 400 has plenty of torque.

Hey~
I don't know what to say...two replies already summed up the comparison! For the extra 400 bucks(??) the 500 scrambler is, you could add that pipe and clutch kit to the 400 and the 500 would get stomped on! That's just my 2 cents
I know what you mean about the 2 stroke power...it is great fun! For fast sport riding, I would have to prefer the 2 stroke! I would much rather have the 4 stroke for woods and hills. My 2 cents again

I was in the same spot as you when I bought my 2000 Scrambler (400 or 500?). Bottom line, "Dollars make sense" if you know what I mean. Polaris tried to make them as equal as possible power wise. And that means more (up front for the buyer) money when we a are talking 4-stroke. If you buy the 400 and the day comes it is not as fast as you want you then spend what you saved on the 400. Pipe, air filter, reeds and clutch. Can you say 10 - 20 % more power!

The first 2 replys just about explain every thing that you would need to know. I like my 400 2 stroke around here because I climb a lot and you dont have much of a run before you are starting up the hill. The advantage with the 2 stroke is that I can get my rpm's up quicker and have more than enough power to make it to the top of the hill. And with the money that I saved with buying the 400 over the 500, the day that I bought it I had the dealer put on a AAEN pipe, K&N air filter and, Boyseen reeds. There is not a 500 around here that will even come close to touching it now. But the 500 4 stroke does have more low end than the 400, but you could fix that by getting the low end pipe(I got the top end),or even modifing the cluch some. That is the way that I look at it.
